American media's coverage of gun violence is fundamentally flawed. It sensationalizes a small number of tragedies and ignores mass swaths of others.

To make much needed change, Columbia Journalism Review united the leaders of journalism with a special edition newspaper: The Inevitable News.
To create the Inevitable News, we analyzed thousands of mass shooting articles to create a template that applies to any mass shooting.

We used this template to create a special edition paper that tells the story of every mass shooting of the past 3 years - with 1 single article.

Personalized versions of The Inevitable News were sent to key journalists and placed outside of major media companies, inviting journalists everywhere to participate in the Gun Violence News Summit.

On April 6th, 2021, the unprecedented Gun Violence News Summit took place, uniting some of the biggest journalists in media and hundreds of their peers to tackle this issue.

The Summit led to the creation of the Gun Violence Coverage Commitment: an agreement on the new path forward for gun violence journalism. In the hands of the biggest papers in the world, this commitment is changing the way gun violence is reported every single day.
